The Purpose of My Life

In Acts 2:4–21, Pastor Matt continued the Be the Church series by teaching on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to speak in many languages so everyone could hear about Jesus. This moment reveals that the Church is not a building, but God’s people filled with His presence and sent on mission. Pastor Matt emphasized that God removes every barrier—cultural, linguistic, or personal—to ensure the gospel is heard. The message challenged the Church to pray first, identify “our one,” and intentionally share God’s grace and truth with those He is drawing to Himself.

Sermon Notes

Q: What is “The Church”?

A1: It is the place where God dwells with His people.

A2: Therefore, it is the place where God’s people experience God’s presence.

Acts 2:4 NIV

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

This is a sign that God will remove every barrier necessary to make sure people hear about Jesus!

Romans 10:17 NIV

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”

“Are Muslims encountering Jesus? A Surprise Awakening."

Acts 2:5-11 NIV

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!

Genesis 11:1 NIV

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

Genesis 11:7 NIV

“Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

Out of love, God will frustrate ungodly plans to make it possible to find him again.

Genesis 11:8-9 NIV

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Acts 2:12 NIV

Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

Acts 2:13 NIV

Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

Acts 2:17 NIV

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”

Acts 2:18-19 NIV

Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.”

In Jesus, God is graciously inviting everyone in to experience His transformational love!

Acts 2:21 NIV

“And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” - (Peter, quoting Joel 2:32)

Romans 10:13 NIV

for “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” -  (Paul quoting Joel 2:32)

Does God really accept everyone who calls on the name of Jesus?

Vision Statement: At Kingsway, we long to become more like Jesus in all we say and do. We believe that God crazy loves this world and sent His only Son, Jesus, so that anyone who desires can experience His awesome and transformational life of love. No one is too radical, too different, or too lost to be beyond His reach.

Therefore, we partner with God to fulfill Jesus’ command: to make disciples of all nations, baptize them, and teach them to obey everything He has taught us. This mission begins with first being intentional to seek the presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit so we can understand the heart and direction of our Father before we act. This posture of prayerful surrender fuels our work and service to Him. As we listen for His voice and depend on His power, we are called to reach our “One”; the one person God has placed on our hearts to love, serve, and invite into relationship with Him.

As we respond in faith, we share the grace and truth of Jesus, reaching not only our “One,” but creating a ripple effect of transformation that impacts families and nations for generations to come.

Our Vision can be summarized like this:

To become more like Jesus, we will intentionally …

PRAY First

REACH our One

SHARE His Grace and Truth

Who is your One?

Romans 10:14 NIV

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
