Use What You Have

Pastor Matt explores Jesus' encounter with the rich young ruler in Luke 18, emphasizing that true discipleship often requires sacrificing what we hold most dear. He challenges the congregation to consider what they might be unwilling to give up for God, reminding them that "what is impossible with man is possible with God" (Luke 18:27). The sermon concludes with a call to generosity, particularly for the church's technological needs.

Sermon Notes

Luke 18:18 NIV

A certain ruler asked him (Jesus), “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Luke 18:19 NIV

“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.”

Luke 18:20 NIV

“You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’”

Luke 18:21 NIV

All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

Matthew 19:20 NIV

“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?

The issue is that this man is not as “good” as he thinks he is.

Luke 18:22 NIV

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Mark 10:21a NIV

Jesus looked at him and loved him…

4 Greek words for love:

Eros: Intimate or erotic love. Like the physical expression between lovers.

Storge: A natural, familial love. Like the love between parents and children, based on familiarity and dependency.

Phileo: A love based on friendship, shared interests, and mutual respect, often describing the bond between close friends.

Agape: A selfless, self-sacrificial love. Like the love God showed us in Jesus Christ.

Meaning: Jesus Agape loved him even though he didn’t get it.

Luke 18:23 NIV

When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.

What is so important in your life, that if God asked you to trust Him with it – you might say no?

Luke 18:24 NIV

Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

His money is going to prevent him from entering the Kingdom!

Luke 18:25 NIV

“Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

Luke 18:26 NIV

Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

Luke 18:27 NIV

Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

I believe that the God of the impossible can change you!

Luke 18:28 NIV

Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”

Luke 18:29-30 NIV

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”
