Good Shepherds Lead Their Sheep

Pastor Matt is back from sabbatical! In this message, he dives into the meaning of God’s name Yahweh (YHWH) and how it brings fresh depth to Psalm 23:1, “The LORD is my shepherd.” Connecting it to Jesus’ words in John 10:11, Matt helps us see God as the Good Shepherd—one who cares, protects, and restores us, just like He did for David in the highs and lows of life.

Sermon Notes

Psalm 23:1 NIV

The LORD (YHWH) is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

Names are important – they help identify you.

Exodus 3:13 NIV

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”

Exodus 3:14 NIV

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Exodus 3:15b NIV

“This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.”

YHWH = I AM (THAT I AM)

“The name Yahweh (YHWH) was committed in trust to Israel alone among the nations… In it alone lay the guarantee of Yahweh’s nearness and of his readiness to help…” - Gerhard Von Rad, Old Testament Theology, Vol. 1

Psalm 20:1 NIV

May the Lord (YHWH) answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

Psalm 20:4 NIV

May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.

Psalm 20:7 NIV

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord (YHWH) our God.

Psalm 23:1 NIV

The Lord (YHWH) is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

David’s experience of God is that He always shows up and always provides.

Isaiah 40:11 NIV

He (YHWH) tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

John 10:11 NIV

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

Jesus came to reveal God to us and to show that He is good.

Psalm 23:2 NIV

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

Now we call out to God in the name of Jesus, and we are heard.

John 14:13 NIV

“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

Psalm 42:5 NIV

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Romans 8:32 NIV

He (God) who did not spare his own Son (Jesus), but gave him up for us all—how will he (God) not also, along with him (His son), graciously give us all things?

As you take communion, pause and give thanks to God for:

1) Giving you life through His son, Jesus.

2) At least one way He has led you and cared for you recently.

Philippians 4:6 NIV

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
