Do Not Waste Your Life
- Matt Nickoson
Luke 5:1-2 NIV
"One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret (Sea of Galilee) the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. He saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets."
Luke 5:3 NIV
"He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat."
Luke 5:4 NIV
"When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, 'Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.'"
Will I trust that Jesus knows more than I do?
Luke 5:5 NIV
"Simon answered, 'Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.'"
Five powerful words: "But because you say so…"
Luke 5:6-7 NIV
"When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink."
Luke 5:8-10a NIV
"When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, 'Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!' For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners."
Luke 5:10b-11 NIV
"Then Jesus said to Simon, 'Don't be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.' So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him."
"I am wired by nature to love the same toys that the world loves. I start to fit in. I start to love what others love. I start to call earth' home.' Before you know it, I am calling luxuries 'needs' and using my money just the way unbelievers do. I begin to forget the war. I don't think much about people perishing. Missions and unreached people drop out of my mind. I stop dreaming about the triumphs of grace. I sink into a secular mindset that looks first to what man can do, not what God can do. It is a terrible sickness. And I thank God for those who have forced me again and again toward a wartime mindset." - John Piper, Don't Waste Your Life
Imagine waking up tomorrow to make sure you don't waste your life.
