Amazing Faith

Sermon Notes

Luke 7:1-2 NIV

When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion's servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.

Luke 7:3-6a NIV

The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, "This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue." So Jesus went with them.

Sometimes faith is found in the most unexpected situations.

Luke 7:6b-7 NIV

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word and my servant will be healed."

Humility is a sign of great leadership!

Romans 12:3 NIV

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

Luke 7:8 NIV

"For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

Luke 7:9-10 NIV

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel." Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Luke 4:22 NIV

All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.

Mark 6:5-6a NIV

He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

How much faith is necessary to move the heart of God?

Luke 7:11-13 NIV

Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry."

Luke 7:14-15 NIV

Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!" The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

Luke 7:16-17 NIV

They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people." This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

How much faith is necessary to move the heart of God?

  • Enough faith to fear who He is and what He is capable of.

Luke 7:16a:

  • They were all filled with awe - NIV

  • Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God – NLT

  • Fear gripped them all, and they began glorifying God - NASB

  • And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God – KJV

  • Fear seized them all, and they glorified God – ESV

How much faith is necessary to move the heart of God?

  • Enough faith to fear who He is and what He is capable of.

  • Enough desire to run to Him instead of away from Him.

1 John 4:18 NIV

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
