Serve FAQ

So, what's this "Serve thing" all about? There are a few basic questions we want to answer right off the bat.

Why should I serve?

Good question. Certainly, you shouldn't serve because you feel guilty about sitting on the sidelines. Likewise, you shouldn't serve simply because someone told you to do so.

Serving ought to be something you get to do, something that flows from a willing heart. So, how do you get there? Understanding the following truths is a good start:

  • God created you to serve. Ephesians 2:10 says, "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Service isn't just a good idea; it is what you were made for. God knows what he has in store for you once you begin serving and that's exciting!
  • Jesus lived a life of service. Jesus said, "For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28). If you are striving to live like Jesus lived, surely serving others should be a high priority in your life.
  • The church needs your involvement. Kingsway is a congregation that is fueled by the active involvement of hundreds of men, women and teenagers. We believe that there are things we need to do and people we need to touch that we'll only be able to accomplish with your wholehearted service. We pray that you allow God to lead you and work through you as you serve at Kingsway. Visit the Volunteer Opportunities page to learn more.

Where do I serve?

Serving isn't just an event that happens at a location. It is a lifestyle that can be lived out in every context, wherever God places you. We want to help you live a life of service in the following areas:

  • Serve in your everyday life. Jesus measures greatness in terms of service, not status, by how many people you serve, not how many people serve you. As you serve in church, don't forget the many other areas in which you're called to be a servant: your family, your friends, your small group, at your kids' school, in the community, at work, your neighbors. The list could go on.
  • Serve at Church. We want you to experience the joy that comes when you choose to serve in a volunteer role at Kingsway. Use our Volunteer Opportunity Finder to locate a ministry that interests you. Check out our monthly list of Top 10 Volunteer Opportunities. If you need more information or direction, take an online spiritual gifts analysis. We need your involvement and we'll help you get started.
  • Serve with your small group. You may belong to a small group that has a desire to serve others. Your small group is a great place to begin living a life of service. Consider serving as a small group and contact the Discipleship department at 317.272.2222, extension 213, or e-mail Jeff to learn more.
